WHAT IF WE BUILT OUR WORLD AROUND HEALING?
This question is at the core of The Healing Project, explored through a constellation of creative works by artists aimed at dismantling structural violence.
The Healing Project is an arts organization based in New York City, originally conceived as a project in 2014 by composer, multidisciplinary artist, and activist Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes.
The Healing Project creates artistic works, collective healing spaces, and advocacy initiatives in partnership with individuals impacted by structural violence to build a world based around healing rather than punishment.
WHAT IS STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE?
From the enslavement of Black people to the theft of Indigenous lands, the United States story begins with violence, forged by a culture of domination and dehumanization that persists today. “Structural violence” is a framework describing the interlocking structures—economic, political, legal, religious, and cultural—that make individuals and communities vulnerable to harm.
The centuries-long abolition movement helps us imagine and build restorative alternatives that transform the root causes of harm.
The Healing Project advances an abolitionist future through three programs.
